OUR MISSION

Our main mission is to glorify God by fulfilling Christ’s Great Commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20), and by obeying and living out God’s Great Commandment, the way of love (Matthew 22:37). With this central mission, we seek to be a community of Christ followers who:

  • Celebrate God in all areas of life
  • Communicate the Good News of Christ’s redeeming love
  • Cultivate faith in God, and
  • Care for one another and the world.

WHAT DOES “CHRISTIAN REFORMED” MEAN?

We are CrossPoint Christian Reformed Church, a member of the many Christian Reformed Churches (CRCs) of North America.

The Christian Reformed Church calls itself “Christian” because it forms one small part of Christ’s church on earth. It recognizes as fellow Christians all people who accept the teachings of the Bible as they are so beautifully summarized in the Apostles’ Creed. This includes believers from many denominations such as Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Baptist and Pentecostal. We may disagree with these believers on some teachings or practices but we recognize them as brothers and sisters in Christ if they believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and if they confess that Jesus died for their sins, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.  CRC teachings are closely akin to Presbyterian and other reformed churches, and it enjoys solid relationships with many of them.

The CRC calls itself “Reformed” because it stands in the tradition of the reformed protestant churches who struggled valiantly in the 16 th Century to return or reform Christianity back to its biblical roots. As reformed protestant churches, these Bible believing Christians “protested” unbiblical teachings in the Roman Catholic Church and sought to reform it. Their mottos included “Scripture alone” as the only source of knowledge for salvation, “Christ alone” as the only way of salvation, through “God’s grace alone” and not by our flawed, sinful works, and through “faith alone” in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as the only way to receive that salvation.

When the desired reformation failed to happen, many Reformed and Lutheran churches formed which still exist today, some which remain faithful to these Scriptural mottos and some which do not.

Regarding the Bible, we believe that “all Scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, The Bible), including the both the Old and New Testaments. Both of these testaments are the revelation of God for the purpose of leading people into a saving relationship with him through the death of Jesus Christ for the sins of human beings and through is resurrection from the dead. While it may be true that we don’t always live up to our ideal to believe and obey the whole Bible, it is our goal to submit all of our lives to the teaching and instruction of Scripture.

DOCTRINES and BELIEFS

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES

We believe the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments to be God’s self-disclosure to humankind and that everything one must believe to be saved from sin and death and to eternal life is sufficiently taught in it; no other divine revelation is needed. Different authors, while writing according to their own styles and personalities, were supernaturally inspired by the Holy Spirit to record the complete will of God. Therefore, with the help of the Holy Spirit, those who sincerely apply themselves to study its literal, historical-grammatical context can accurately understand God’s Word. Scripture is fully trustworthy as our final and sufficient authority for all of life (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

THE TRIUNE GOD

We believe in the one true, eternal and sovereign God (John 17:3: Isaiah 45:5) existing in perfect unity as three equally and fully divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20). Each member of the Godhead, while executing distinct but complementary roles in creation and redemptive history, has precisely the same nature, attributes, and being, and is equally worthy of the same glory and honor and obedience (John 1:1-4; Acts 5:3-4). As the ultimate Sovereign, God is in control of all things for the sake of his own glory and for the good of his redeemed people.

GOD THE FATHER

We believe God the Father created all things for His glory according to His own will (Genesis 1:1, 31; Revelation 4:11), through His Son, Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit. He upholds all things by the Word of His power and grace, exercising sovereign lordship over all creation, providence, and redemption (Colossians 1:17, Hebrews 1:3; Genesis 1:2).

GOD THE SON

We believe that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son, moved by love in accordance with the will of the Father, took on human flesh (John 1:1, 14, 18). Conceived through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the virgin Mary. He, being fully God and fully human (John 14:8-9), lived a sinless life and sacrificially shed His blood and died on the cross in our place accomplishing redemption for all who place their faith in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). He rose visibly and bodily from the dead on the third day and ascended into heaven, where, at the Father’s right hand, He is now Head of His Body the Church, the only Saviour and Mediator between God and humans, and will return to earth in power and glory to consummate His redemptive mission (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 Timothy 3:16).

GOD THE SPIRIT

We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He draws the unredeemed to repentance and faith, and at salvation imparts new spiritual life to the believer, bringing that person into union with Christ and the Body of Christ, his Church. The Holy Spirit sanctifies, seals, fills, guides, instructs, comforts, equips, empowers, permanently indwells at salvation, and grants spiritual gifts to the believer for Christ-like living and service (John 16:8; 13:15; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 4:11-12; Romans 8:9-17; 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 12:4-5, 11-13; Galatians 5:25; Hebrews 2:1-4).

HUMANKIND

We believe that God created humankind - male and female - in His own image and likeness, free of sin, to glorify Himself and enjoy His fellowship. Tempted by Satan, but in the sovereign plan of God, humans freely chose to disobey God, bringing sin, death and condemnation to all humankind. All human beings, therefore, are totally depraved by nature and by choice. Alienated from God without defense or excuse, and subject to God’s righteous wrath, all of humanity is in desperate need of the Saviour (Genesis 3:1-6; Romans 3:10-19; Romans 1:18, 32).

SALVATION

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, as the substitutionary atonement in our place, and that salvation is found in none other than Jesus Christ. Before Creation, God chose those who would be saved and granted this unearned grace solely based on His sovereign good pleasure. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross was the sole and complete payment for sins, fully satisfying God’s righteous wrath, for each person that turns from sin in repentance and places their faith in Christ alone by grace alone. At salvation each person is made a new creation by the Holy Spirit, declared righteous before God, and secured as an adopted child of God forever. Genuine faith continues in obedience and love for Jesus Christ with a life eager to glorify God and persevere to the end (Romans 3:20-24; Romans 8:37-39; 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21; Ephesians 2:1-10).

THE CHURCH

We believe that upon placing one’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, the believer is made part of the Body of Christ, the one universal Church, of which Jesus Christ is the Head. The Scriptures command believers to gather locally in order to devote themselves to worship, prayer, teaching of the Word, fellowship, the sacraments of baptism and communion, service to the local body through the development and use of talents and spiritual gifts, and outreach to the world to make disciples (Ephesians 1:22-23; Acts 2:42-46; 1 Corinthians 14:26; Matthew 28:18-20). Wherever God’s people meet regularly in obedience to this command, there is the local expression of the Church under the watchful care of pastors and elders. Church members are to work together in love and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ (Acts 20:28; Ephesians 3:21; Ephesians 4:16).

BAPTISM and COMMUNION

We believe that Christian baptism, whether by immersion or sprinkling, is a public sign and seal that God has washed away our sins through the blood of Jesus Christ (Titus 3:5). It is also a sign of God’s covenant promise to adopt us as his children and a sign of his lordship and authority over us. Through the sign of baptism, believers publicly commit themselves to trust in Christ alone for their salvation and to live in obedience to Him. On the basis of God’s covenant with Abraham and with his children, to be his God and the God of his children (Genesis 17:7), we believe that New Testament baptism replaces the Old Testament sign of circumcision and, thus, the children of believers are also to be baptized despite their inability to understand its meaning. As they get older they are called to accept God’s baptismal claims on their lives and put their faith in Him (Acts 2:38-39, Acts 16:33, Colossians 2:11-13). The Lord’s Supper is the united commemoration by believers of Christ’s death until He comes and should be preceded by a careful self-examination (Acts 2:41; Romans 6:3-6; 1 Corinthians 11:20-29).

MISSIONS

We believe it is the duty and privilege of every believer and local church fellowship to glorify God by responding as active participants in the Great Commission call of Jesus to go and make disciples of all nations. All believers should look for opportunities to share their faith in Christ with the prayer that others will come to saving faith in Him. (Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:15)

SEXUALITY AND MARRIAGE

God created only two sexes, male and female (man and woman) in his image. Except for rare birth defects, we believe a person’s biological (genital) sex at birth accords with his or her life-long gender identity as male or female, which God our Creator designed at conception and gave as a gift to be embraced with gratitude and worship. Regarding marriage, we believe it is a holy covenant which God intends as a lifelong union between one man and one woman, and is designed by God for His glory, for a husband and wife’s enjoyment of companionship, sexual intimacy, and procreation, and to signify the covenant love between Christ and His bride, the Church. God designed sexual intimacy to be expressed and consummated only between a man and a woman, when they are united as one flesh in marriage.  We acknowledge that all of us have sexual hurts and brokenness that needs the loving grace of Christ to forgive, heal and transform us into his faithful and joyful followers. We welcome all to join us on our journey of becoming holy and whole also in this area of our lives.  (Genesis 1:27-28; 2:24; Malachi 2:14; Proverbs 5:18; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians 6:9-20; 7:3-5; Ephesians 5:31-32).

THINGS TO COME

We believe in and expectantly await the glorious, visible and personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The blessed hope of His return has vital bearing on the personal life, service, and mission of the believer (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the saved and the lost. The lost will be raised to judgment and experience eternal wrath in hell. The saved will be raised to eternal joy in the new heaven and new earth in the eternal presence of God (Matthew 16:27; Matthew 25:46; John 5:28-29; Revelation 21:1-4).
